Halloween season is creeping up on us, and Fergus Falls is absolutely bursting with spooky spectacular events that will make your October unforgettable! Whether you are a tiny tot in their first costume or a grown-up who still gets excited about candy corn, this town has something wickedly wonderful waiting for you.
Get Your Spook On Early!
Mini Makers Halloween Floam kicks things off on Wednesday, October 15th at the Fergus Falls Public Library (1-2 PM). If you have a 1st-3rd grader, who loves getting their hands messy, this slime-meets-foam creation session is pure magic. Fair warning though – registration fills up faster than a vampire fleeing sunrise, so grab those spots at bit.ly/ffploct151!
Weekend Warriors, This One's for You!
Fleet Farm's 5th Annual Trunk or Treat is pulling double duty this year! Friday, October 24th (4-6 PM) brings the outdoor trunk decorating fun, and then Saturday, October 25th (9 AM-12 PM) they're taking the party inside for some retail trick-or-treating. Two days of candy? We are not complaining!
Speaking of Saturday the 25th, the Downtown Fergus Falls Candy Crawl (1-3 PM) is calling all costume enthusiasts! Just follow the tombstones from business to business – it's like a treasure hunt, but the treasure is chocolate. Contact Dandelion & Burdock if you want to join the fun as a participating business.
Don't sleep on Sunday, October 26th either! The Eagles Aerie Trunk or Treat (2-3:30 PM) combines candy collecting with community giving – bring a canned food item and they'll match it with a monetary donation to the food shelf. Their motto "people helping people" really shines during spooky season.
The Main Event: Halloween Day Madness!
Thursday, October 31st is when Fergus Falls truly transforms into Halloween headquarters:
Morning Magic starts at the Fergus Falls Public Library with their Halloween Fun program (10-11 AM). Perfect for the 0-5 crowd (big siblings very welcome!), expect Halloween stories, a Monster Mash Dance Party, and a costume parade. Plus, trick-or-treating runs ALL DAY at the library from 9 AM to 6 PM!
The Otter Cove Children's Museum (aka the "Boo-Seum", opens at 9 AM with Halloween-themed activities, crafts, and a slime lab. The real party starts at 4 PM with DJ Caltrain's basement glow dance party running until 6 PM.
Afternoon Adventures heat up with Nelson Auto's 2nd Annual Trunk-or-Treat (4-6 PM). Seven-plus vehicles packed with candy, all indoors so Minnesota weather cannot crash this party! Perfect for kids 12 and under.
The Spectacular Lake Alice Trick-or-Treat Extravaganza
Here is where things get absolutely incredible – the Trick-or-Treat at Lake Alice (5-9 PM) is hands down one of the most breathtaking Halloween experiences you'll ever witness. Picture this: more than 1,500 participants in their most creative costumes creating a living, breathing parade of Halloween wonder around the entire lake.
The sight of hundreds of little superheroes, princesses, zombies, and everything in between circling Lake Alice as the sunsets is nothing short of spectacular. It is like watching Halloween come alive in the most beautiful setting imaginable. The sheer scale of this event – families, friends, and neighbors all coming together in costume – creates a fantastic atmosphere!
Evening Adventures continue with the VFW Auxiliary Heroes Trunk or Treat (5-6 PM), bringing together the Fergus Falls Fire Department, Police Department, and other community heroes. Because nothing says Halloween like getting candy from your local superheroes!
Evening Enlightenment awaits at Whole Heart Collective (12-6 PM) for their Wild Wisdom and Psychic Event. Free entry gets you Halloween lore, tarot readings, reiki sessions, and all sorts of mystical knowledge. Whether you're a believer or just curious, it's a fascinating way to spend part of Halloween.
But wait – the night's just getting started! The Fergus Falls Zombie Crawl is back from the dead after the pandemic put it in the grave. This all-ages event starts with meetups at 5:30 PM (either at The Mill Hotel parking lot for a short shamble or RE/MAX Advantage Plus for a longer lurk), then the zombie horde moves together at 5:45 PM toward Spies Riverfront Park.
Can't make the crawl? No worries – drop by Spies Riverfront Park anytime between 6-10 PM for live music from The Winter Sloths, Popdovit, Starlight Knife, and DJ Hot Ribs. It is free with optional donations, because nobody is turned away for lack of funds!
Pro tip: If you are staying overnight for the zombie festivities, The Mill Hotel has a special "BRAINS" code for 15% off your stay. How perfect is that?
The Crown Jewel: YMCA's Community Halloween Carnival
While the exact date wasn't specified, the Fergus Falls YMCA Community Halloween Carnival deserves special mention as the ultimate family-friendly Halloween destination. This free event packs everything into one spooktacular package: carnival games, prize drawings, a kid-friendly haunted hallway, mountains of candy, face painting, and a costume photo station.
The best part? It is completely free, though donations help keep these amazing community events alive. They are always looking for sponsors, volunteers, and community partners, so call 218.739.4489 or email ffyinfo@ymcanorthernsky.org if you want to help make the magic happen.
So dust off those costumes, practice your spookiest walk, and get ready for a Halloween season!
