On Being Bicycle Friendly

November is here and my office window is still open…a little bit! As snow is in the forecast biking is not in my near future. Yes, I’m a fair-weather-biker. There are many here who are snow-bicyclists and each year we see more fat-tire bikes than the previous year. Although the trails turn to snowmobilers and sitings of bicyclists are few and far between, it’s the perfect time for our community to be planning and preparing for bike enthusiasts.

Biking is good…for you, for me, for businesses, for Fergus Falls.  I’m proud to say there is a dedicated group of people in Fergus Falls working together to make Fergus Falls more bicycle friendly. And that’s not just a generic “hey, let’s be more bike friendly.” It is a rigorously designed and tested program through the League of American Bicyclists. We are working hard to become a Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC). Our application is due February 11 next year.

In Fergus Falls we have a full spectrum of people and businesses working toward this official designation. We are all invested in the success of biking – our healthcare community, businesses, government, schools, police department, convention & visitors bureau and cyclists. We already have three “Bicycle Friendly Businesses” and more League Cycling Instructors.

We’re also on the map…Cross-country bicyclists find the Central Lakes Trail a super route to connect east-west through western Minnesota. Our trailhead in DeLagoon Park is continually getting tweaked and improved. At the City Council meeting November 3rd a master campground plan was approved. The development calls for real restrooms and showers and two yurts. There is also a gravel road that will be paved – connecting directly to the bike trail.

Bike events have become popular too. They not only provide a fun way to stay active, but generally have a fundraising component, providing additional motivation for participation. So whether riding for fun, to stay healthy, or see the country, our door is open and the welcome mat is ready. See you in the spring.
